Two-Game Weekend in San Antonio Begins at UTSA

| By:

Roadrunners to host Aggies for first time in nearly a decade in duel of 0-1 teams.

SAN ANTONIO - Following Monday night's 11-point loss to Arizona in the Pan American Center, Jody Adams will lead her squad on the road for the first time this season. The team will spend the weekend in The Lone Star State, as they gear up for a pair of games with Alamo City's finest. Before taking on Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon, NM State will first go through UTSA on Friday. They'll take an off day on Saturday before squaring off with the Cardinals on Sunday.

Scouting the Roadrunners

The team is led by Karen Aston, in her third season with UTSA. Since taking the reins, Aston has a 20-43 record in San Antonio. Prior to joining the Roadrunners, she spent eight seasons with Texas, winning the 2017 Big Coach of the Year award. Including her impressive stint in Austin as well as stops with Charlotte and North Texas, Aston has amassed a career record of 305-189.

UTSA and NM State are coming off similar starts to the week. The Roadrunners fell to Arizona State on Monday, Nov. 6. They came up short in Tempe, losing 70-55 in a poor shooting performance across the board.

Idara Udo came off the bench, and finished one rebound shy of a double-double in her first collegiate game. The freshman was one of two Roadrunners to hit double-digit points, and grabbed four of her nine rebounds on the offensive end, adding two blocks and a steal.

Forward Maya Linton was the other Roadrunner to tally 10 points, doing so efficiently. The sophomore hit four of her seven field goal attempts, and nailed both of her free throws. Linton additionally grabbed four rebounds and three steals.

UTSA recently left CUSA for the American Athletic Conference in July. Before their departure, Jordyn Jenkins won CUSA Women's Basketball Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year back in March. Jenkins was named to the Preseason All-AAC Second Team, but did not log minutes in Monday's loss.

What to Watch For

  • The Aggies and Roadrunners last met nearly a decade ago, also in San Antonio. On Dec. 29, 2013, UTSA took down NM State, winning 65-56.

  • Senior guard Molly Kaiser put up 22 points in Monday's game against Arizona. She set her career high with four made three-pointers, all of which coming in her 16-point fourth quarter.

  • NM State is looking to build on their final three quarters of work against Arizona. After dropping the first period 19-6, the Aggies outscored the Wildcats the rest of the way. NM State won both the second and third quarter, and were even with Arizona in the fourth. Following a 1-for-14 first quarter, the Aggies shot 43.9% from the field the rest of the way.

  • Sabou Gueye looked impressive on both ends on Monday, posting 13 points and 6 steals, both good for career highs.
