Aggies Host Newcomer Tarleton for WAC Series

NM State to play WAC newcomer Tarleton in El Paso.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's basketball team is set to host Western Athletic Conference newcomer Tarleton State at Eastwood High School in El Paso on Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27. Both games are slated for 1 p.m. (MT) tip-off.

Quick Notes
• The Aggies defense does a good job forcing turnovers, ranking second in the WAC with 18.5 opponent turnovers per game.
 
• NM State's 12.9 offensive rebounds per game rank second in the conference. The Aggies lead the league with a 33.2-percent offensive rebound percentage.
 
• The Aggies are one of the top three-point shooting teams in the WAC ranking second with a 31.9-percent shooting clip from beyond the arc. Rodrea Echols leads NM State, shooting a red-hot 53.1-percent from deep during WAC play to rank second overall.
 
• Among qualifying players, Aaliyah Prince leads all WAC guards with a 46.0 shooting percentage and ranks sixth overall. Prince has scored at least 20 points five times this season.
 
Scouting the Texans
Tarleton, in its first season at Division I, holds a 7-12 record and a 3-5 conference record. In their last conference series, the Texans swept Chicago State in Chicago. This will be the first meeting between Tarleton State and NM State.
 
The Texans have a strong defense that ranks third in the league, giving up 63.6 points per game. Tarleton is also great from the free throw line as it makes 71.4-percent of its shots from the charity stripe.
 
Individually, Marissa Escamilla ranks fifth in the WAC with 14.0 points per game while shooting 41.8-percent from the floor. Freshman Iyana Dorsey also averages double-figures for the Texans with 13.5 points per game.
 
Last Time Out
NM State traveled to Orem, Utah, for a pair of conference games against Utah Valley on Feb. 19 and 20. The first game of the weekend was the Aaliyah Prince show as the San Antonio, Texas, native torched the Wolverines for 21 points with 15 of those points coming in the second half. Dee Dee Echols came through with a layup to put the Aggies up 64-62 with 10 seconds to play before icing the game with a free throw. Echols finished with 16 points in the 65-62 Aggie win. However, NM State was unable to complete the sweep, falling to UVU 56-47 on Feb. 20.
