Graduated from Saguaro High School where he had a stellar career that included playing in 83 games at the varsity level... Named the AIA 4A Conference Offensive Player of the Year and the 4A Desert Sky Region Offensive Player of the Year... As a pitcher, he appeared in 35 games and posted an 18-3 record, including going 14-1 across his junior and senior campaigns... In his final season with the Sabercats, he threw 39 innings, maintained a 1.26 ERA and racked up 82 strikeouts on his way to finishing the season with a perfect 7-0 record... As a senior, he faced 142 batters and allowed just 10 hits... Also had an impressive junior season as he finished with a 1.62 ERA and struck out 75 batters in 52 innings pitched... Across 122.2 innings of work in high school, Shumard allowed just two home runs and 35 earned runs... Helped lead Saguaro to an AIA 4A state title while finishing the year with a 28-3 overall record and an undefeated 10-0 record in the 4A Desert Sky Region... Offensively, Shumard finished his high school career with a .344 batting average, 72 hits, 68 RBIs and four home runs in 209 at-bats... As a senior, he batted .403 and turned in 31 RBIs in 23 games... Defensively, he finished with a .954 fielding percentage, including a perfect fielding percentage with 33 putouts as a junior.
