NM State Baseball Opens Conference Play Against Sam Houston

The Aggies will play their first Conference USA Opponent this weekend Friday, March 15 to Sunday, March 17.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The NM State Aggies will be back at Presley Askew Field to host the 11-6 Sam Houston Bearkats in their first conference series of the season and in Aggie nation since joining the Conference USA. It will be a three-game series with the first game on Friday, March 15 at 6 p.m. MT, the second game on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. MT and Sunday March 17 at 11 a.m. MT.  



On-Base Streaks 
Four different Aggies are currently on double digit on-base streaks. Catcher Nick Gore is leading the charge with a 17 game on-base streak meaning he has reached base safely in every game of the season.  

Titus Dumitru is in second place; he is currently on a 14 game on-base streak. To go along with his on-base streak Dumitru is also on an eight-game hitting streak which is currently the longs active streak on the team.  

The first and second batters in the Aggies lineup are the final two Aggies with a double digit on-base streak. Keith Jones II is on a 12 game on-base streak and Damone Hale is on a 10 game on-base streak.  

Home Field Advantage 
Every single one of the Aggies nine wins have taken place in Presly Askew Field. The Aggies, so far this season, have only lost two games in the city of crosses. In those two games, the Aggies lost to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, since then they have gone on a seven-game winning streak at home.  

In nine of the eleven games the Aggies have played in Las Cruces, N.M. they have scored at least ten runs. In four of the Aggies home games, they have managed to put the game away in just seven innings due to a 10-run mercy rule.  

National Rankings 
The NM State Aggies are leading the conference and among the top in several different statistical categories. Most notably the Aggies rank as the ninth in the country and first in the conference in scoring, earning 10.6 runs per game.  

The Aggies are 10th in the country in runs and first in the conference with 180 runs on the season. To go along with the runs the Aggies have a team Batting average of .328 which is 17th in the country and first in the conference.  

The Aggies have been excellent at reaching base safely. They have an on-base percentage of .453 which is 16th in the country and first in the conference. They have done this on the back of 194 hits which puts them 14th in the country and first in the conference.  

Scouting the Bearkats 
At the plate the Bearkats are hitting .280 as a team with their top hitter, Walker Janek, batting .406 on the year. The Bearkats have a slugging percentage of .421 and an on-base percentage of .362. Hunter Autrey is leading the Bearkats with a .686 Slugging percentage. And Janek is leading them with a .455 on-base percentage. 

On the mound the Bearkats have an ERA of 3.92, Logan Hewitt is leading the Bearkats with a 1.04 ERA on the season. The Bearkats opponents recorded a batting average of .262, with Gavi Coldiron having the lowest B/AVG of .219 on the team. 

Series History 
These two teams have only played each other on four occasions, none of these match ups have been played in Las Cruces, N.M. We are currently tied with the Bearkats as both teams have two wins.  

The Aggies and the Bearkats first played each other on May 25, 2022, in Mesa, Ariz. The Aggies managed to win that matchup 3-1. They would then play each other in a three-game series in Huntsville, Texas in 2023.  

The Aggies lost the first two games of the series by scores of 3-2 and 17-4. They would then win the third and final game of the series 10-6 to even the Series record.

The NM State Aggies will face off against Sam Houston in a three-game series, Friday, March 15 at 6 p.m. MT, Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. MT and Sunday March 17 at 11 a.m. MT.
