Fort Myers, FLA – The New Mexico State Women's Basketball team faced #4 ranked Texas today as the Longhorns ultimately took the game from the Aggies 50-90.
Though the outcome of the match would decisively be in the Longhorns favor, the Aggies had several silver linings by the buzzer sound.
The Borderland institute had two players finish in double figures over Texas as Molly Kaiser led the team in the game. Shooting just one attempt from deep, Kaiser drained it early in the 3rd Quarter to give the team a spark coming back out from the locker room. She also shot 5-6 FG from the charity stripe that kept the Aggies in the hunt for most of the first half. Though Kaiser would finish with the most made FTs, both Fanta Gassama and Sylena Peterson went perfect at the stripe as they each shot 4-for-4 individually.
Following Kaiser's performance was Sylena Peterson, who started off hot for the Aggies. She finished the first half of the match leading NMSU with nine points individually while picking up two defensive boards in the process.
The Aggies finished today with just four offensive boards total and five less defensive boards (17) than Texas. Though the statsheet may look even from both of these squads on a team note, the key for the Longhorns win was Madison Booker's driving and Taylor Jone's 2nd chance putbacks. Both of their star players finished high in double figures with eight made FGs from each of them over NMSU.
The Aggies managed to take a lead over Texas with two minutes left in the first quarter, but the Longhorns quickly gained it back and ran away with the game. The Aggies were able to hold off their opponent with five points less in the 2nd Quarter than the first, but struggled to find rhythm to take an advantage.
