LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After falling in ten innings on Friday night, NM State needed just seven innings to dismantle Sacramento State on Saturday. The Aggies nearly matched their single-game high in scoring as they smacked the Hornets, 21-9.
Preston Godfrey,
Hunter Antillon,
Keith Jones II, and
Nolan Funke combined to drive in 15 runs for NM State on Saturday. Funke got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning with a home run to center field.
After Sacramento State tied it in the second, NM State scored five runs to take a lead that it would never surrender. With two runners on, Godfrey belted a three-run blast to left-center. The Aggies got two more runs in the inning on a throwing error and an RBI groundout.
The Hornets once again got a run in the third but NM State answered with four more runs, taking an 11-2 lead. After an RBI double from
Nick Gore and a sacrifice fly from Antillon, Jones II put two more runs on the board with a home run to left field. Jones' fifth home run of the season came on his birthday and put NM State within a run of activiating the run rule.
Already holding a commanding lead, NM State kept the offense attack going, scoring eight runs in the fourth.
Christian Perez and Godfrey combined to plate three runs with a pair of singles before Antillon placed a two-run double inside the left field line. Shortly after the two-bagger,
Mitch Namie was cleared for lift off, blasting a two-run shot to right-center. Funke capped off the explosive frame with a double, plating
Kevin Jimenez.
After four runs by the Hornets cut into the deficit in the fifth inning, NM State once again had an answer in the bottom half of the inning. Antillon lifted his second sacrifice fly of the day before Jones II brought home a run on a single to left. Sacramento State managed to get three more runs in the sixth inning but
Cade Swenson worked a scoreless seventh to close out the shortened game.
NM State and Sacramento State will once again meet on Sunday afternoon as the Aggies look to take the series. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. MT from Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces.
