Aggies Back in Win Column After Defeating OUAZ

Kevin Jimenez drove in a career-high five runs, including a grand slam

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After falling in four straight contests, NM State is back in the win column following a 12-run outburst on Tuesday morning. Back by more than 500 students from local East Picacho Elementary, the Aggies found timely hits and a few big innings to secure the victory. A career-high five runs batted in from Kevin Jimenez helped carve the path for NM State's 12-6 win.

NM State got out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Cal Villareal opened the scoring with a groundout, plating Damone Hale. Mitch Namie and Jimenez both singled through the left side, pushing the Aggies' lead to three. Later in the inning, Nolan Funke launched a two-run home run into the trees in right center.

After two tremendous innings by Hayden Johns, the Spirit finally cracked through in the fourth inning. Forcing NM State to go to the bullpen, OUAZ lifted a grand slam to pull back within a run. In the fifth inning, the Spirit tied the game with a single to center field.

The Aggies turned the tides and scored six runs in the bottom half of the fifth. After run-scoring knocks from Keith Jones II and Namie, Jimenez once again came through with a huge blast. The team leader in home runs added to his total with a grand slam, pushing the score to 11-5 in favor of NM State.

Villareal picked up his second RBI of the day when he lifted a sacrifice fly to score Christian Perez in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Out of the bullpen, Hayden Walker, Kade Benavidez, and Will Sierra were lights out to end the ballgame. The trio combined to work 4.2 scoreless innings to close the ballgame for the Aggie victory.

NM State will remain at home for three games this weekend against conference foe Sacramento State. Tickets are still available for all three games at Presley Askew Field through Ticketmaster or the Pan American Center box office.
