NM State Slips in Stephenville on Friday

Damone Hale and Christian Perez both recorded multi-hit games in the loss

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – After a scorching offensive weekend against Stephen F. Austin, the NM State offense was brought back to earth by the Tarleton Texans on Friday night. The Texans held the Aggies to just one run on eight hits and Tarleton took the series opener by a score of 7-1.

Tarleton jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning, powered by three consecutive hits to open the ballgame. It took a minute before Nolan Funke got NM State on the scoreboard in the third inning. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Funke's swinging bunt brought in Romeo Ballesteros and brought NM State back within two.

In the fifth inning, Tarleton threatened to crack the game wide-open but an outfield assist from Cal Villareal ended the scare. After pushing a run across earlier in the frame, Tarleton attempted to advance both runners before Villareal threw a laser to hose the trail runner at second.

One inning later, Tarleton pushed three more runs across, powered by a two-run home run. The reigning TicketSmarter WAC Hitter of the Week, Jack Wagner, stayed red-hot in the series opener. Wagner recorded a pair of triples and the two-run blast for the Texans.

NM State looked to cut into the deficit in the eighth inning. Following a Keith Jones II walk, Mitch Namie and Funke ripped back-to-back singles to load the bases with just one out. Texan pitcher Zach Poe pulled himself up by his boot straps, fanning the next two Aggies to escape the jam.

The Texans once again shut down the Aggies in the ninth inning, taking a 7-1 victory in the series opener. The two teams will once again meet on Saturday afternoon with first pitch being thrown at 2:00 p.m. MT.
