NM State Overpowered by Oregon State in 12-0 Sunday Setback

Aggies turn attention to Troy Cox Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Seeking its second-straight win over Oregon State, the NM State softball team found itself unable to match the Beavers' high-powered offense as the Aggies suffered a 12-0, five-inning loss Sunday afternoon at the NM State Softball Complex.

Starting pitcher Felicia De La Torre (0-2) did a good job of holding Oregon State's bats in check through the first two frames. De La Torre surrendered just a single run on Lici Campbell's two-out solo homer in the top portion of the frame.

The Aggies, unfortunately, could do nothing with their two baserunners through the first two frames. Yazzy Avila was left stranded at first in the home half of the first after drawing a one-out walk and following her leadoff single in the second Paige Knight was thrown out at second on a stolen base try.

Oregon State began opening things up in the third when they got to De La Torre early in the frame. Back-to-back doubles to start the third produced another run for the Beavers and signaled the end of De La Torre's day. Relief arm Jordin King came on and retired the first two batters she faced before an RBI double and an RBI single put the Aggies in a 4-0 hole.

A five-run Oregon State fourth, featuring a grand slam by Frankie Hammoude, extended the visitors' lead to 9-0.

Hammoude generated another long ball in the top of the fifth for the Beavers. Her three-run shot in that frame accounted for the visitors' final three runs of the game as well as the 12-0 final score.

De La Torre surrendered six hits and a trio of runs through her two frames of work while five of King's six runs were of the earned variety. Sarah Haendiges fired a complete game for the Beavers in the circle, fanning seven through her five frames of work.

Knight, Hannah Lindsay, Madison Muxen and Ramsay Lopez each picked up a hit for NM State in the setback. Five Beavers finished with multiple hits to lead the visitors' 15-hit assault. Hammoude finished 2-for-3 at the dish with seven RBI and a pair of runs scored.

NM State continues its nine-game home stand to open the 2022 campaign by hosting the 2022 Troy Cox Classic. NM State will take part in five games over the course of three days beginning with Thursday showdowns against Nebraska (3:00 p.m.) and UT Arlington (5:30 p.m.) at the NM State Softball Complex.
