LAS CRUCES –  The NM State softball team gives up 10 runs in their first game of the season, falling to a tough Texas State squad 10-2  in a five inning affair.
 
The Bobcats opened their 2022 scoring account with a two out homerun off the bat of Dani Elder in the top of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Aggies gave up a base on a wild pitch, then the Bobcats added six to their total in the top of the third behind another two out homerun, this time hit by Caitlyn Rogers.
 
Sophomore Hailey Tanori recorded the first hit of the season for NM State, reaching base for the first time this season on a single, and later advancing to third on an errant throw. It was then that El Paso native Yazzy Avila recorded her first career hit, driving in Tanori from third to open the 2022 scoring account in the bottom of the third.
 
Texas State scored three in the fourth frame off the back of a fielding error, which scored two of the three runs for the Bobcats. Redshirt sophomore Felicia De La Torre made her first appearance of the season in relief of starter Kayla Bowen, recording the last out of the third inning via groundout. 
 
The Aggies scored their second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single by Yazzy Avila, her second hit of the night and first career RBI. Avila then got caught attempting to steal second, ending the inning and ultimately the game.
