Aggies' Offense Cools Off in Loss to No. 8 Arizona

| By:
| Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. - The NM State softball team (18-18) was unable to get the offense going in an 8-0 loss to No. 8 Arizona (24-5) on a sunny afternoon at Rita Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. The Aggies fell to Team Mexico 12-5 in the first game of the day.

After posting 15 runs in the first three games of the Bear Down Fiesta, the Aggie offense cooled off with just four hits against the Wildcats. Hailey Tanori led off the game with a single, and Matalasi Faapito looked to have a home run in the next at-bat, but the ball curved just wide of the left field foul pole. She would be retired, and the Aggies left Tanori on second. The Wildcats struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first and threatened again in the second, but Felicia De La Torre got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Wildcats' lead at two. The Aggies threatened again in the third inning, but Tanori was called out at third on a Ramsay Lopez single to end the inning.

The Wildcats made the Aggies pay for the mistake with a grand slam in the bottom of the inning to take the 6-0 lead. The Wildcats added a two-run home run in the fifth inning to end the game.

In game one against Team Mexico, the Aggie bats picked up right where they left off on Friday when Faapito hit a solo home run to get the Aggies on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Kayla Bowen laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Lopez to even the game at two. Home runs from Lopez and Brianna Gallegos gave the Aggies a 5-3 lead in the third inning, but Team Mexico scored nine runs over the next four innings to put the Aggies away.

The Aggies will resume WAC play next Friday when they take on Tarleton State at the NM State Softball Complex. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday. The final game of the series will take place at noon on Saturday. The first game on Friday will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Arizona, Comcast New Mexico, the WAC Digital Network and the Bally Sports App.
