IRVINE, Calif. - The NM State women's soccer team (3-8) gave the top team in the WAC all it could handle but two goals in the final ten minutes by California Baptist (8-1-2) would be the deciding factor, as the Aggies dropped a 3-1 contest on Thursday afternoon.
The Aggies controlled the first 20 minutes of the match and didn't allow the Lancer offense to get anything going. This allowed the Aggies to strike first, as
Xitlaly Hernandez scored her fifth goal of the year in the 22nd minute finding just enough room underneath the top crossbar to give the Aggies the lead. The Lancers responded with a goal of its own in the 30th minute to tie the game.
The Aggie defense held its own over the next 50 minutes to keep the game tied, but the Lancers broke through with goals in the 80th and 87th minutes to pull away from the Aggies.
Makenna Gottschalk had another solid outing for the Aggies, as she made a couple of diving saves throughout the match to keep the Aggies in the game. Gottschalk ended the day with six saves bringing her season total to 41.
The two teams will finish up the series on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network.
