Tampa, Fla. - The NM State Aggies (9-12) came up just short in two hard fought contests against the South Florida Bulls (5-6) Wednesday afternoon in Tampa, Fla. The Aggies dropped both games by a score of 4-3 including a 12-inning marathon in the final game of the day.Â
Game One
Redshirt freshman
Matalasi Faapito got the Aggies going in the first inning with a solo home run off the scoreboard to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. USF came back with three runs of its own in the next two innings. The Aggies would get a couple of singles from redshirt freshmen
Maya Martinez and
Hailey Tanori to start the third inning. Back-to-back walks from
Ramsay Lopez and
Nikki Butler would bring Martinez across the plate. Freshman
Jillian Taylor was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to bring home Tanori to tie the game. The Bulls answered with a run in the fourth, but the Aggie offense stalled out recording only one hit in the final four innings.Â
Felicia De La Torre had another solid outing in the circle, as she came in to relieve Faapito in the second inning and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out four.Â
Game Two
The 12-inning marathon started almost identically to game one, as Faapito hit her second home run of the day in the first inning to give the Aggies the early lead. Once again, the Bulls came back with three runs of its own in the first inning. Lopez launched her fifth home run of the year to tie the game in the third before both pitchers took over. Over the next eight innings, the two teams combined for just eight hits and no runs. In the top of the 12th, the Aggies had a shot to get a run across, but freshman
Audrey Shebloski was called out at home following a Tanori bunt. The Bulls were able to get a couple of singles in the bottom of the inning to walk-off the Aggies.
The game was tied for the longest game in Aggie history, as the Aggies went 12 innings with UT Arlington on Apr. 6, 2013.Â
Faapito bounced back after being pulled in the first game, as she came in to relieve De La Torre and went 7.2 innings allowing no earned runs while striking out four batters.
