Jordan Wins 500th Match

Aggies cruise to victory for head coach Mike Jordan’s 500th win.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The New Mexico State volleyball team hit a red-hot .419 and held California Baptist to just .085 hitting as head coach Mike Jordan picked up his 500th win with a sweep (25-12, 25-16, 25-20) at Van Dyne Arena in Riverside, Calif., on Monday night. The win was the Aggies 27th WAC win in-a-row.

Jordan is in his 23rd season with the Aggies and his first win came on Sept. 4, 1998. Among active coaches, Jordan ranks 30th with 500 wins. Under Jordan, the Aggies have gone to 11 NCAA Tournaments and produced nine all-Americans for 12 total awards. Jordan has been named coach of the year nine times.

"I told the team after the match today that the special part is all the relationships you get to form in this business," Coach Jordan reflected. "From the coaches you compete against who become friends, to the players who played for you and the people you work with day-to-day, I've just been very fortunate to have lived this coaching life and it's been a lot of fun."
NM State (7-0, 7-0 WAC) dominated from the outset, jumping out to an 18-8 lead and forcing a CBU (4-4, 3-4) timeout. With the Lancers on their heels, the Aggies closed out the set for a 25-12 win in set one. The Aggie block was dominant in the set as they recorded six total blocks and held California Baptist to -.136 hitting. NM State hit .588 and recorded just two errors.

The Lancers kept set two close before the Aggie onslaught began again. Leading 10-7, New Mexico State ripped off a 15-9 run to close out the second set, 25-16, capped by a kill from Victoria Barrett. In the set, six different Aggies hit multiple kills as they hit .316 as a squad. The defense was excellent again, holding CBU to .054 hitting in the set.

The third set was a little closer than the first two but the Lancers couldn't keep up with the Aggies' offensive weapons in a 25-20 deciding set. Savannah Davison and Lia Mosher went off in the deciding set with Mosher smashing five kills on seven swings and Davison recording six on 11 swings.
The Aggies league-leading offense didn't disappoint, finishing with 50 kills on 93 swings and just 11 errors while holding CBU to 25 kills and 17 attack errors.

Davison, coming off Player of the Week honors, was on fire again as the Toronto, Ont., native hit 15 kills on 27 attempts for a .444 hitting percentage while also adding four blocks. Mosher was a force in the middle, coming up with four blocks while hitting a career-high .750 with nine kills and no errors on 12 swings. Right side Katie Birtcil was also error-less on the night with seven kills on 12 swings for a career-high .583 hitting percentage while Cat Kelly also poured in seven kills.

The Aggies scorching offense ran through setters Natalie Mikels and Carly Aigner-Swesey who finished with 19 and 14 assists respectively. Aigner-Swesey notched her second double-double of the season with 11 digs.

NM State and the Lancers are set to duke it out again, tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. (MT). Aggie fans can stream all the action live on the WAC Digital Network.
