Stingy Defense Propels the Aggies to Second Win of Young Season

The New Mexico State Aggies women's basketball team moved to 2-0 as it picked up a 57-548 win over Incarnate Word inside the Pan Am on Saturday night.

LAS CRUCES – The Aggies earned win number two on the season as they outscored Incarnate Word 57-48 on Saturday evening inside the Pan American Center. NM State was led by Taylor Donaldson who score 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Bigue Sarr was also a key contributor once again, posting 13 points and eight boards.

The opening quarter of action was a display of great defense on both sides as both offenses struggled to take the lid off the hoop. Bigue Sarr paced the Aggies in the first, scoring four of the team's six points. Grays and Kaiser each recorded a pair of steals in the period.

The Aggies seemed to find their scoring stroke in the second as they outscored UIW 16-13, highlighted by six points from Grays. Donaldson also scored six in the quarter, including a four-point run on her own to give the Aggies the lead with 6:01 remaining in the first half. It looked as though the Aggies would carry a two-point advantage into the half before Incarnate Word's Jaaucklyn Moore knocked down a jumper in the final seconds of the second quarter, tying the game at 22-22.

The second half scoring for the Aggies opened with a three-pointer from Mel Isbell that came off of an offensive rebound. The lead went back-and-forth in the opening five minutes of the third quarter before a Deja Terrell layup sparked an 8-2 run for the Aggies. A Molly Kaiser and-one capped off the Aggies best scoring quarter to send NM State into the fourth with a seven-point lead.

Incarnate Word quickly shrunk the Aggie lead to tie the score at 43-43 with 6:14 remaining. The Aggies immediately went on a 6-0 run led by four points from Soufia Inoussa to recapture the lead. A made basket from Sarr to put the Aggies ahead by double-digits was the back-breaker as NM State went on to earn its second win of the season. In the final quarter, Sarr and Inoussa each scored five to pace the Aggies and help collect the victory.
