ROUND I
NM State won't have too much time to dwell on Wednesday night's loss, turning its focus towards Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico with just two days to prepare. The Lobos enter the first of two meetings 2-0 after wins over CSUN on the road and Iona at home. The 221st meeting between the two programs could see NM State walk away with its 100th win against its rivals while the host Lobos could tally their 122nd win against the Aggies.
Â
New Mexico currently has a whopping six players averaging in double-figures and is paced by Corey Manigault – who is posting 18.0 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game heading into Saturday's match-up. He's followed by Anthony Mathis with 13.0 points per game while Vance Jackson checks in with 12.5 points per game. Makuach Maluach checks in averaging 10.5 points while Dane Kuiper and Keith McGee are averaging 10 points apiece to round out the double-digit scorers.
Â
Of the bunch, Jackson is averaging a double-double as well – averaging 10 rebounds in addition to his 12.5 points per game. Manigault is also big on the boards through two games, averaging 7.5 rebounds while Vladimir Pinchuk is scoring 9.5 points to go with 6.0 rebounds.
Â
As a team, the Lobos are shooting 51-percent from the floor and 41-percent from downtown. UNM's length has helped the team on defense, averaging 4.5 blocks so far on the year and have swiped the ball 15 times two games into the season.
Â
DEEPER DIVE INTO THE RIVALRY
Heading into Saturday's contest, the Aggies have won three-straight against the Lobos and look to make it four by the end of Saturday night. The last time the Aggies won four-straight games against the UNM came during the 1993-94 seasons – coincidentally also the last time NM State swept New Mexico in back-to-back seasons. Below is a list of instances the Aggies have swept the Lobos in back-to-back season with a few notations.
Â
1916 and 1917 (1 game each)
1922 and 1923 (4 games in 1 year, unknown dates for 2 games)
1937 and 1938 (4 games each year)Â
1939 and 1940 (4 in '39 and 6 in '40)Â
1954 and 1955
1957 and 1958 (1 game each)
1993 and 1994Â
Â
LAST TIME OUT
New Mexico State kept its pace Saint Mary's early on in the first half, but a big run by the Gaels heading into the break was too much for the Aggies to overcome. Despite a comeback effort in the second stanza by NM State, the veteran Saint Mary's team weathered the storm and handed the Aggies their first loss of the year 73-58.
Â
AJ Harris led the Aggies with 15 points while
Ivan Aurrecoechea posted 12 points on six rebounds.
Eli Chuha chipped in with nine points and six boards of his own while
Terrell Brown added seven points with four boards.
Â
UP NEXT
The Aggies return home the following week and plays host to Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday, Nov. 21, in a 6 p.m. contest on the WAC Digital Network. NM State won't have to travel very far after that as it heads east to face Battle of I-10 rival UTEP on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Don Haskins Center.
