@NMStateBaseball Set to Clash with BYU

The NM State baseball team is set to battle BYU on Tuesday, March 13, for another midweek showdown.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State baseball team stayed on the road this week as they moved south on I-15 to take on BYU this Tuesday, March 14, for a 6 p.m. first pitch on BYUtv. Spencer Linton will have the call on Tuesday night while Gary Sheide serves as the analyst.

PROBABLE STARTERS
NM State skipper Brian Green sends Matthew McHugh to the mound (1-1, 5.65 ERA) against the Cougars while BYU counters with Keaton Cenatiempo (0-0, 9.00 ERA). McHugh has pitched 14.1 innings of work for NM State in three starts while opponents are batting .328 with five walks and dozen punch outs. Cenatiempo has pitch three innings of relief in four appearances, including one that combined for a shutout. Two of the six hits he's given up have come via the long ball with opposing batters hitting a crisp .400.

ROAD WARRIORS
The team hit the road with the trip to Salt Lake City, which began an eight-game road swing playing against the Utes, BYU, Arizona and UC Santa Barbara. Three of the four teams played in the NCAA Tournament in 2016 (Arizona, Utah and UC Santa Barbara), while Arizona and Santa Barbara advanced to the College Baseball World Series which featured the Wildcats making it to the finals before falling to Coastal Carolina.

GETTING STREAKY
Second baseman Brent Sakurai is currently on an 11-game hitting-streak, which is the longest on the team this season, followed closely behind by freshman Joey Ortiz (8).

LAST TIME OUT
The Aggies head into Tuesday's contest with a 10-8 mark after shutting out Utah on Sunday behind a quality start from Johnathan Groff. The lefty pitched 8.1 innings of work while scattering five hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Aggie batters also pushed across three runs on nine hits in the series finale, including a 3-for-4 night from senior infield Brent Sakurai. However, it was the middle of the lineup that came away with the clutch hits.

UP NEXT
After its midweek game, the Aggies will get to finally head home and rest for a week before heading to Tucson for another midweek game. NM State then wraps up its eight-game road trip with a three-game series against UC Santa Barbara.
