SALT LAKE CITY – The New Mexico State baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision Saturday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark.
Â
The lone bright spot for the Aggies came in the seventh when
Tristen Carranza took Riley Ottesen's 3-1 pitch for a ride over the left center wall. That was the only run production for New Mexico State as it went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Â
NM State (9-8) starter
Marcel Renteria (2-1, 3.98 ERA) pitched six innings of work while giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in the loss.
Â
Utah (9-3) knocked in three runs in the opening frame of play and never looked back with Ottensen pitching seven solid innings of work while giving up just one run on six hits with five punch outs. The Utes added pair of runs in the fourth before the NM State pitching staff settled down to hold Utah scoreless the remaining five innings play.
Â
The Aggies will look to salvage a win on Sunday as they send lefty Johnathan Groff to the mound. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. (MT) on the Pac-12+ Live Stream.
