NM State Comes from Behind to Defeat Rio Grande Rival New Mexico

Box Score ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Despite trailing by one entering the seventh inning, the NM State softball team defeated Rio Grande rival New Mexico in a 3-2, come-from-behind victory in eight innings.
 
The Aggies (36-19) scored three runs and amassed two RBIs on nine hits. Brennalyn Nakamura went 3-for-3 and had three stolen bases. Karysta Donisthorpe pitched 8.0 innings and had six strikeouts.
 
New Mexico (22-22) scored two runs and had one RBI on six hits. Lisa Rodrigues pitched 7.1 innings and had one strikeout.
 
The Aggies put runners on base in the first and second innings. Emma Adams hit a single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Kelsey Horton was walked. Adams advanced to third as Fiana Finau flew out, but both runners were left stranded in the first inning. In the second inning, B. Nakamura singled up the middle, stole second and advanced to third as Tatum Reedy hit a sacrifice bunt, but she was left stranded.
 
New Mexico took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Karissa Haleman hit a solo home run over straightaway center to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
 
NM State put runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth inning. B. Nakamura hit a single to left field and stole second. Tatum Reedy was walked and Jovanni Felix entered as a pinch runner to put runners on first and second. The runners advanced to second and third as Kennedy Johnson grounded out, but the both were left stranded.
 
The Aggies scored in the top of the seventh inning. B. Nakamura singled up the middle and stole second. Reedy hit a single to left center and advanced to second on the throw as B. Nakamura was tagged out at third. Reedy moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a separate wild pitch to knot the game at 1-1.
 
NM State added a run in the top of the eighth inning. Horton singled up the middle and advanced to third as Finau hit a double to left center. Horton scored as Corrin Green hit a sacrifice fly to left field, while Finau advanced to a throwing error on the left fielder. Castro hit a double to right field to score Finau as the Aggies took a 3-1 lead.  
 
New Mexico scored again in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cheyenne Smith hit a single to straightaway center. Michala Erickson reached on a fielder's choice while Smith was tagged out on the play. Casados hit a single to and advanced to second on an Aggie error, while Erickson scored on the play to leave the NM State with a 3-2 lead. Adams then caught a foul ball for the final out to secure the game for the Aggies.
 
The Aggies take the field again on May 12 at 4:30 p.m. MT as they travel to Seattle for the WAC Tournament. NM State will face the winner of the Seattle U/Utah Valley Game, which will be played on May 11.
