NM State Tops Grand Canyon to Win Series

Box Score PHOENIX – The NM State softball team secured the series victory over Grand Canyon on Saturday night as they captured a 9-1 win at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium. The Aggies fell 6-5 in game one on Friday before bouncing back to top the Lopes 8-0 in game two.
 
The Aggies (28-19, 8-1 WAC) scored nine runs and amassed seven RBIs on 10 hits. Corrin Green was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Kayla Green pitched 5.0 innings and had one strikeout in 29 batters faced.
 
Grand Canyon (29-15, 4-5) scored one run and had one RBI on three hits. Taylor Nowlin collected two strikeouts and allowed seven runs on six hits in 21 batters faced.
 
The Aggies took the lead in the top of the first inning. Fahren Glackin was walked and advanced to third as Fiana Finau hit a double to right center. Glackin and Finau both scored as Green hit a single to right center to give NM State a 2-0 advantage.
 
After retiring Grand Canyon in order in the bottom of the first inning, the Aggies put a runner in scoring position in the second and third innings. In the second inning, Emma Adams was walked and advanced to second as Tatum Reedy hit a sacrifice bunt, but Adams was left stranded. In the third inning, Finau was walked and advanced to third as Green singled to right center, but both were left stranded.
 
NM State extended the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Adams singled up the middle, Brennalyn Nakamura reached on an error and Rachel Rodriguez hit a bunt single to load the bases. Glackin was walked to score Adams before Horton doubled to right center to score B. Nakamura and Rodriguez.
 
Finau was walked to keep the bases loaded. Green then reached on a fielder's choice as Glackin was tagged out at home plate, but a throwing error by the catcher allowed Horton to score and Finau to advance to third. Finau then scored on a wild pitch to give NM State a 7-0 advantage after the top of the fourth inning.
 
Grand Canyon loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning. Laynee Gomez singled to third base, Kendsey Hill reached on an error and Heaven Acquart entered as a pinch runner before Shae Smith was walked. Castro then made a diving catch in center field and turned a double play with Rodriguez at second base to end the inning.  
 
The home team scored in the bottom of the sixth inning as Camree Wartman hit a solo home run over right field to leave NM State with a 7-1 lead. The Aggies then retired the next three batters in order as Makayla McAdams collected two strikeouts and Horton caught a pop up with the tip of her glove to end the sixth inning.
 
The Aggies extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning. Castro and Haley Nakamura both singled through the right side to put runners on first and second. Nue Sivia then hit a triple down the right field line to score Castro and H. Nakamura as NM State captured a 9-1 victory.
 
NM State takes the field again on Tuesday as they take a break from conference play to face Battle of I-10 rival UTEP at 6:00 p.m. MT in El Paso, Texas.
