NM State Splits Double Header with Grand Canyon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHOENIX – After falling 6-5 in game one, the NM State softball team rebounded to capture an 8-0 win in five innings in game two against Grand Canyon on Friday night at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
 
Game One
 
The Aggies (27-19, 7-1 WAC) scored five runs and amassed five RBIs on five hits. Horton went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a home run, her 12th home run of the season. Makayla McAdams pitched 5.2 innings and had one strikeout in 28 batters faced.
 
Grand Canyon (29-14, 4-4 WAC) scored six runs and had six RBIs on 10 hits. Taylor Nowlin pitched 7.0 innings and had five strikeouts in 28 batters faced.
 
The Aggies took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Rachel Rodriguez was walked and advanced to second as Emma Adams grounded out. Kelsey Horton hit a single to score Rodriguez, but Horton was tagged out as she advanced to second. Fiana Finau singled to right center and Fahren Glackin was walked to put runners on first and second. Victoria Castro hit a double to right center to score Finau as NM State took a 2-0 advantage.
 
NM State scored again in the top of the third inning as Horton hit a solo home run over right field to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead. Horton leads the team with 12 home runs this season.
 
Grand Canyon scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brittany Medina doubled to right field and Taylor Kaye entered as a pinch runner. Kaye advanced to third on a ground out and then scored as Madelyn Dowdle hit a single up the middle to cut the Aggies lead to 3-1.
 
The home team took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nicole Newbury reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third as Camree Wartman doubled to center field. Medina hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Newbury. After Briielle Breland was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, Sierra Smith hit a three-RBI home over right field to give the Lopes a 5-3 advantage.
 
The Aggies scored again in the top of the sixth inning. Horton was walked before Finau hit a two-RBI home run over right field to knot the score at 5-5. Finau has eight home runs this season.
 
Grand Canyon added a run in the bottom of the seventh. Newbury hit a double to left center and Heaven Acquart entered as a pinch runner. Acquart advanced to third as Wartman hit a single and then scored as Medina singled to right field to secure a 6-5 victory for the Lopes.
 
Game Two
 
The Aggies scored eight runs and amassed six RBIs on 11 hits. Corrin Green went 2-for-2 and had two RBIs and a home run. Kayla Green pitched 5.0 innings and had two strikeouts in 16 batters faced.
 
Grand Canyon had two hits and two errors. Kailey Regester pitched 4.1 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits.
 
The Aggies took the lead in the top of the first inning. Adams hit a single to left field and advanced to second as Horton singled to the shortstop. Finau then hit a single up the middle, advanced to second on the throw and advanced to third on an error by the center fielder as Adams and Horton scored on the play. Finau then scored on a passed ball as NM State took a 3-0 advantage.
 
After retiring the home team in order in the bottom of the second inning, NM State scored again in the top of the third inning as Horton hit a solo home run over right center. The home run was her second of the day and the 13th of the season.
 
NM State extended the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Finau was walked before Corrin Green hit a two-RBI home run over right center. Green now has four home runs this season. Glackin and Castro both singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. Reedy then flied out to right field to advance the runners to second and third base. Nue Sivia hit a single up the middle to score Glackin and Castro as the Aggies secured an 8-0 victory.
 
The Aggies take the field again tomorrow as they face Grand Canyon in the series finale at 7:00 p.m. MT at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
