Aggies fall late to Wyoming 62-59

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State Aggies made a 20-5 run over 10 of the last 12 minutes of the game to overcome a 15-point deficit, but the Wyoming Cowboys answered with a key 3-pointer to snap the run as Wyoming claimed a 62-59 win Sunday at the Pan American Center.

The Aggies (5-4) had tied the game at 53-all with 1:54 to play when Pascal Siakam hit a pair of free throws. The Cowboys (6-4) answered on the next possession as Josh Adams buried the deep 3-pointer with the shot clock under six seconds to take a 56-53 lead. Wyoming would not trail again.

Adams collected 22 points with five rebounds, including seven points in the final 90 seconds.

"They beat us," said NM State coach Marvin Menzies. "We made a great run, but in playing the zone freed up Adams. He put them on his back and makes the deep 3, he beat us."

The Aggies got 20 points from junior Ian Baker, who posted his second 20-point game this season to go with three assists.

Siakam posted his eighth double-double of the year and 15th of his career with 14 points and 15 rebounds to go with two blocked shots. Johnathon Wilkins added eight points with eight rebounds.

NM State held a 24-22 lead at the half, but the Cowboys fired out of the locker room after intermission. Wyoming played at a torrid clip in the first nine minutes of the second half, shooting 72 percent during a 28-9 run that gave the Cowboys a 15-point lead.

The Aggies came back with a jumper by Jalyn Pennie, a layup by Siakam and two free throws from Baker to start the 20-5 run.

"Our defense pulled us back into it," said Menzies. "We went to the zone and it was good for us collectively."

Still the game grated on the ninth-year Aggie boss.

"I'm frustrated. These close losses are hopefully things that can really benefit us going forward. It's hard to feel good about a game that you lose like that."

NM State is back into rivalry mode for the next two games, both on the road.

The Aggies visit Rio Grande Rival New Mexico on Wednesday, then go to I-25 rival UTEP on Saturday.
