THE FIRST SERVE
• With the end of the season nearing, the Aggies prepare for their penultimate road trip of the season as they visit UTRGV and UT Arlington beginning Thursday afternoon.
• After falling 4-3 in their WAC opener versus Seattle U, NM State bounced back to take down Grand Canyon 4-3 at home on Sunday, April 2.
• NM State received a major jolt from the play of its doubles teams who went a perfect 3-0, led by
Jordy Visser and
Yehor Opanasenko who capped off a perfect 2-0 weekend.
• The weekend play of Visser and Opanasenko led the tandem to earning WAC Doubles Team of the Week honors.
• With the two wins, Visser and Opanasenko now sit as one of only three WAC tandems to hoist a 2-0 record. Additionally, the duo leads the Aggies with six victories on the season.
• Last weekend, the Aggies were led in singles action by
Corey Clarke who turned in a pair of wins at the No. 1 spot, including taking down 2022 WAC Freshman of the Year Jonathan Da Silva on Sunday.
• Luca Fé D'Ostiani also survived the opening weekend of league play without a blemish as he defeated his counterparts on the No. 6 line from Seattle U and Grand Canyon to turn the Aggies only other 2-0 record in singles play.
SCOUTING THE VAQUEROS
UTRGV enters Thursday's match with just one WAC match under their belt after falling to UT Arlingon 6-1 on Sunday. As a team, UTRGV is just 5-14, however, more than half of its wins have come at home. Although, the Vaqueros will host this Thursday's matches at Kiskeya Athletics in Pharr, Texas, where they have yet to play a match this season. Thus far, Emilien Burnel leads the Vaqueros with an 8-9 record at the No. 1 position. UTRGV will also lean on Burnel in doubles play as he teams up with Borna Devald to represent the Vaqueros at the No. 1 spot in doubles.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
UT Arlington brings a 10-7 record with them into the weekend while they are 1-0 in their lone WAC matchup. Before hosting NM State on Sunday, UT Arlington will welcome Abilene Christian on Thursday. The Mavericks' top singles player this season has been Anton Shepp who is 11-5 in spring play with ten of those wins coming at the No. 1 position. Shepp will likely team up with Solano Caffarena as the tandem is 9-3 on the season and 7-3 as the No. 1 doubles team.
COMING UP NEXT
After colliding with the Vaqueros and Mavericks, the Aggies will conclude their regular season with a dual versus Abilene Christian in Abilene, Texas, on April 16.
