Doubles Play Fuels Aggies' Home Victory Over Grand Canyon

NM State picks up second straight win over the Lopes

LAS CRUCES, N.M. –  With a 4-3 win over Grand Canyon on Senior Day at the NM State Tennis Center, the Aggies put an end to their seven-match losing streak. NM State started the match on the right foot as it swept all three doubles matches. Later, the doubles point would prove to be the difference as the Aggies edged out a GCU squad that now sits at 0-2 in league play.

DOUBLES
  • The Aggies sprinted out of the gates as Jordy Visser and Yehor Opanasenko made quick work of the Lopes' top doubles team as they knocked off Jonathan Da Silva and David Wekesa 6-1 on court one.
  • Then, NM State's No. 2 doubles team of Corey Clarke and Roko Stipetic combined to claim a 7-6 win over William Alsterback and Mattia Ghedin to earn the Aggies a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
  • With the doubles point already in hand, Luca Fé D'Ostiani and Itay Feigin added a cherry on top as they pulled off a narrow 7-6 win over Martim Marujo and Paolo Rosati.
SINGLES
  • Grand Canyon drew even with a win on line five before Luca Fé D'Ostiani collected his second straight win and fifth of the season as he defeated Mattia Ghedin in straight sets to move the Aggies back in front.
  • The match continued to go back and forth as GCU picked up a win at the No. 2 position, however, Corey Clarke picked up an emotional 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over 2022 WAC Freshman of the Year Jonathan Da Silva to put the Aggies just one singles win away from a victory with two matches still to be decided.
  • Like Clarke, Roko Stipetic was one of four Aggies to reach a third set with his GCU counterpart as he and Paolo Rosati traded opening sets. Stipetic ultimately clinched the match for the Aggies with a big 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 3.
UP NEXT
The Aggies now hit the road to take on UTRGV and UT Arlington this upcoming weekend before concluding the regular season at Abilene Christian on April 16.
