NM State Defeats Incarnate Word to Secure Second Straight Win

Aggies return to the NM State Tennis Center on Sunday morning to host NAU

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Behind dominant play in both singles and doubles, the Aggies (3-3) picked up their second straight win as they earned a 6-1 win over Incarnate Word (5-3) on Saturday afternoon at the NM State Tennis Center.

"I am really proud of this team," said Head Coach Emily Wang. "This was a good win for us, and they showed a lot of grit and fight. Incarnate word is a tough team, and we knew that it was going to be a battle."

DOUBLES
  • The senior duo featuring Miranda Bishard and Bella Nguyen set the tone for the Aggies early on as they claimed a convincing 6-1 win at the No. 2 position – defeating Incarnate Word's Amelie Montalvo and Gargi Pawar.
  • After the Cardinals evened the score with a win on line No. 1, the pair of Dora Kurdi and Natsuki Nishimura fought their way to a narrow 7-5 win over Lyric Bonilla and Nitika Girish to hand NM State a one-point advantage entering singles action.

SINGLES
  • After finishing with a team-high 14 singles wins during her freshman campaign, Lisa Zhu flexed her muscles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lyric Bonilla at the No. 2 spot.
  • Meanwhile, Natsuki Nishimura followed suit as she matched Zhu's performance with a 6-1, 6-0 win of her own over the Cardinals' Amelie Montalvo.
  • Moments later, Anna Pinaeiva secured the team win for the Aggies as she topped Brandelyn Fulgenzi to tally her third singles win of the season.
  • Bella Nguyen then moved her singles record to 2-0 on the season as she defeated Girish Nitika.
  • Finally, both Valeriia Ivanovskaia and Miranda Bishard would watch their matches go to a third set with Bishard managing the Aggies' fifth solo win on the day – winning 7-6 (5), 3-6, 10-4.
