TUCSON, Ariz. – NM State made its debut of the 2022-23 season on the Robson Tennis Courts on the Campus of the University of Arizona on Friday.

"It was a tough first day, but the freshman got off to a promising start," noted Head Coach Carlos Vargas. "We still have a long ways to go to be in top shape, but we're looking forward to having a better day tomorrow."
 
Singles play in the Black Draw headlined the play of the Aggies on day one as Henrik Lynum and Ryan Ford each earned victories to advance to the second round. Lynum tallied his first win of the fall season over Northern Arizona's Morgan Donovan (6-5, 7-5) – earning him a spot on the line across Aggie teammate Luca fe d'Ostiani in the second round.
 
Fe d'Ostiani would be the victor of the all-NM-State match as he defeated Lynum, 6-2, 6-1, to earn a meeting with New Mexico's Alexander Maggs in the semifinals tomorrow morning.
 
Meanwhile, Ford earned a default victory over Gonzaga's Martin Bats after Bats had to bow out of the match due to injury. However, Ford would fall to NAU's Daniel Torres in the quarterfinals.
 
Second Team All-WAC selection Jordy Visser also made his debut during the Wildcat Invite as he pushed Arizona's Dominique Rolland to three sets before dropping the first round meeting, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
 
Although no Aggie doubles teams picked up a win on the first day of play, the duo of Lynum and Vassanth Mathan battled to a tiebreaker against the tandem of Anderson and Richards from Grand Canyon before falling 7-6 (8-6).

The Aggies will return to action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. as they compete on the second of three days at the Wildcat Invite.
