Aggie Invitational Draws (Final)

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -
NM State men's tennis senior Louis Menard claimed a singles championship in the first Crimson flight and the Aggies wrapped up their first fall event of 2021 by taking part in the final day of the Aggie Invitational Sunday at the NM State Tennis Complex.

DOUBLES
• With a chance at third place in the first Crimson flight bracket, Louis Menard and Martin Simecek didn't squander their chance. The NM State duo took out Northern Arizona's pairing of Daniel Dillon and and Maciej Zomber by an 8-5 score.
• Elsewhere in tandem action, Gijs Akkermans and Corey Clarke collected a fifth-place finish in the first Crimson flight. The Aggies' pair of competitors bested Northern Arizona's twosome of Dominik Buzonics and Alex Groves by a narrow 8-7 (11-9) tally.

SINGLES
• Menard put the finishing touches on a perfect weekend in one-on-one action in his championship match of the first Crimson flight bracket. NM State's Frenchman scored a 6-3, 7-6 (6) triumph over Lamar's Daniel Sanco Arbizu in the championship match of that particular bracket.
• Playing for third place in the first Crimson flight, Simecek had the upper hand early on against Abilene Christian's Savan Chabra. Unfortunately, Chabra battled back to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win which made Simecek settle for a fourth-place finish.
• Akkermans also found himself in a championship bout as the Aggies' sophomore took on Northern Arizona's Groves in the second Crimson flight title tilt. It was Groves, though, who came out on top by a 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-1 score to claim that title.
• On the other side of the second Crimson flight bracket, Clarke claimed a ninth-place finish with his 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Northern Arizona's Chris Steele.
• Like Simecek, Ryan Ford had a chance to pick up a third-place finish at the Aggie Invitational. In the third Crimson flight bracket, Ford faced off against Abilene Christian's Ryan Flanagan only to see the Wildcat score a 6-1, 6-1 win. Ford's fourth-place finish was NM State's second of the event in singles play.

COMING UP NEXT
• Colorado Springs, Colo., is the destination for the Aggies as they'll take part in the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains hosted by Air Force. The three-day tournament is set to begin this Thursday (Sept. 16) and will wrap up Saturday (Sept. 18).
