NM State Cruises into WAC Tournament Title Match with 4-0 Win over Seattle U

Second-seeded Aggies set to face top-seeded Lopes Sunday

WAC Tournament Central

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - For the ninth consecutive time, the NM State men's tennis team will play for a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament title.

The second-seeded Aggies extended that streak by taking a dominant route to the finals with their 4-0 shutout victory over third-seeded Seattle U Saturday afternoon in a WAC Tournament semifinal match at the NM State Tennis Center.

DOUBLES
• All the time it took for NM State to lock up the doubles point was a little over 20 minutes. The All-WAC Doubles Second Team doubles pairing of Corey Clarke and Martin Simecek took down the Redhawks' duo of Emilio Monroy and Julian Wong on line two.
• Following their teammates' 20-minute victory in flight two, Gijs Akkermans and Nicolas Buitrago joined forces to seal the deal for the Aggies on line three. NM State's pair handled Seattle U's tandem of Mats Krause and Billy Givens-Jensen by a 6-1 tally to put the hosts up 1-0.

SINGLES
• Clarke extended his singles match winning streak to seven matches by easing past Monroy 6-3, 6-0 in line four action.
• The lower half of the Aggies' singles lineup continued to excel as Jordy Visser claimed a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over the likes of Krause in flight five.
• Needing just one more point to seal the deal, the Aggies got it on line six. Petr Stavrovskij out-dueled Lars Schmassman by a 6-2, 6-4 score to clinch NM State's shutout win over Seattle U.

COMING UP NEXT
• A rematch of the 2019 WAC Tournament championship match is set for 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the NM State Tennis Center as number two seed NM State and top-seeded Grand Canyon duke it out for the right to move on to the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies and Lopes were 2021 WAC regular season co-champions and NM State is hoping to put an end to a four-match losing streak against Grand Canyon.
