LAS CRUCES, N.M. - 110 minutes was not enough to decide a winner Thursday afternoon at the NM State Soccer Athletic Complex as New Mexico State (3-9-1) played Dixie State (2-7-2) to a 2-2 draw.
The two teams went back and forth in the first half with the Trailblazers striking first in the 38th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Aggies responded quickly in the second half as
Megan Ormson scored her third goal of the year in the 52nd minute.
Corey Kizer sent a ball deep into the box, and Ormson was able collect it and send it into the net with her left foot.
The Traiblazers were able to grab the lead once again in the 65th minute, but the Aggies weren't going to go down quietly. In her first game back from injury,
Hannah Leitner got some space in the middle of the box thanks to a nice pass from
Xitlaly Hernandez and delivered a strike into the net to tie the game.
Each team got a couple more looks in the end of regulation, but no one was able to convert. In the two overtimes, the teams combined for just one shot on goal which came in the 100th minute from Ormson.
Makenna Gottschalk had another terrific day, making several highlight-worthy plays in the net. Gottschalk ended the game with six saves to increase her season total to 54.
The two teams will be finish off the series Saturday at 1 p.m. at the NM State Soccer Athletic Complex. NM State will be honoring two seniors,
Dmitri Fong and
Jody Hernandez, before the match at 12:45 p.m.
