NM State Falls to UTSA, 4-3, in El Paso

Challa wins third-straight singles match

EL PASO - An early deficit for the NM State women's tennis team proved to be too much to overcome as the Aggies dropped a 4-3 non-conference match to UTSA Saturday afternoon at the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club.

DOUBLES
• UTSA jumped out to an early lead after securing the doubles point.
• Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga dropped a 6-2 decision on the top line to the Roadrunners' tandem of Aleksandra Zlatarova and Sophie Omoworare. From there, UTSA wrapped up the doubles point after Chloe Gavino and Bella Nguyen found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-4 decision against Keegan McCain and Jasmin Starr on line two.

SINGLES
• The Roadrunners' lead increased to 2-0 after a win by default in sixth-flight singles play and the visitors moved one team point away from victory following Miranda Bishard's 6-4, 6-1 setback on line three.
• UTSA clinched the match with a triumph on line two. In that tilt, Gavino was on the wrong end of a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Zlatarova.
• NM State and UTSA made the choice to continue play, and Challa hiked her singles winning streak to three matches thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Starr in top-flight action.
• Kalaga experienced success against the Roadrunners, too, earning a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Laura Munoz-Baroja in fourth-flight play.
• Nguyen closed out the match with a win, too, putting forth a 6-4, 7-6 (3) triumph against Catalina Cabrique in the fifth flight.

COMING UP NEXT
• The Aggies put the wraps on their four-match run in El Paso Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when they host Utah State. The teams will compete at the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club.
