CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After a pair of setbacks in its first two matches of the H-E-B Tournament of champions, the NM State men's tennis team closed out its weekend at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on a strong note by taking down the host Islanders 4-1.
The win pushed NM State to 2-7 on the year and the Aggies handed the Southland Conference power just their second loss of 2021 in the process.
DOUBLES
• Much like what transpired earlier in the day against UTSA, the Aggies didn't get off to the best start in tandem play. However, this time they battled back.
• Down 1-0, NM State saw Jordy Visser and Nicolas Buitrago capture a 6-4 win over Ryuya Ata and Kyohei Yamanaka on line one.
• The top-flight win set the stages for Corey Clarke and Martin Simecek to be the heroes. NM State's third-flight duo collected a 6-2 win over Nathan Schwartz and Chad Nguyen to lock up the doubles point.
SINGLES
• With the doubles point in their back pocket, the Aggies used the momentum they gathered up from that to take the Islanders down in singles play.
• Menard kept the good times rolling with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ryuya Ata in top-flight action to put the visitors up 2-0.
• The Islanders battled back with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on line six, but NM State wouldn't be denied. Corey Clarke put the Aggies one point away from victory with a big 6-4, 6-3 win over Carlos Berna Ruiz in fifth-flight action.
• Nicolas Buitrago put a bow around the Aggies' victory by taking down Kyohei Yamanaka 6-3, 6-3 in second-flight play.
COMING UP NEXT
• Lubbock, Texas, is the Aggies' next stop in the Lone Star State. NM State is set to take on Texas Tech there on Saturday, March 6 at 3:00 p.m.
