Arizona Invitational Final Results
TUCSON, Ariz. – That's the way to wrap up a fall season.
NM State men's tennis senior
Louis Menard emerged as the victor in the Blue Draw at the Arizona Invitational, posting an impressive 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 over Arizona's Gustaf Strom in the championship match of that singles draw Sunday at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.
DOUBLES
• In their final doubles match of the fall,
Gijs Akkermans and
Corey Clarke suffered a 6-4 defeat at the hands of Gonzaga's Oliver Andersson and Pablo Galvan. Akkermand and Clarke finished with a 1-2 record at the event.
• For the second time in as many days, Menard and
Martin Simecek picked up a doubles win over a WAC foe. The Aggies' pairing posted a 6-3 triumph over Grand Canyon's Stan Samucewicz and Loic Van Zeggelaar. Menard and Simecek finished with a 2-1 record at the event.
SINGLES
• Pitted against the 35
th-ranked NCAA Division I men's tennis singles player in the nation, Menard gave way in the middle set but played nearly flawless tennis in his championship bout with Arizona's Strom. Menard dropped just a single game in the sets he won during his 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory against the Wildcats' nationally-ranked player.
• Simecek was a winner in his final singles match of the fall, besting Northern Arizona's Chris Steele by a 7-5, 6-2 score.
• Like Menard, Clarke had made it to the finals of his singles draw. Unfortunately, two singles draw titles would not be brought back to Las Cruces as Clarke suffered a 6-4, 6-4 setback to Northern Arizona's Daniel Dillon in the championship match of the Gray Draw.
COMING UP NEXT
• With their fall seasons in the books, NM State turns its attention to the championship portion of its 2021-22 campaign. The Aggies' next matches will take place in January of 2022.
