@NMStateMTEN Begins Title Defense Against No. 3 Kansas City

The NM State men’s tennis team is set to defend its WAC Championship title on Saturday versus No. 3 Kansas City.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The New Mexico State men's tennis team is set to defend its Western Athletic Conference Championship title this Saturday, April 27, at Noon (MT) when the second-seeded Aggies face off against No. 3 Kansas City at the Brownsville Tennis Center.

NM State enters the weekend 14-9 overall on the year with a 4-1 mark in league action and 4-3 mark when playing on a neutral court. The last time these two teams squared off, the Aggies prevailed 6-1 at home as part of the first WAC Pod.

New Mexico State is led by sophomore Louis Menard, who owns a 24-10 overall mark in singles play and perfect 5-0 record in league matches. He was recently named First-Team All-WAC in singles on Thursday after another tremendous season.

Teammates Nicolas Buitrago and Mauri Benitez check in with 16 wins apiece for the second-most win totals on the team with Buitrago owning a 4-1 mark in league action compared to Benitez's 3-2 record. Senior Stijn de Haan and freshman Martin Simecek are next on the team with 15 wins each while Enrique Asmar rounds it out with 14 wins on the season in singles play.

UMKC enters the semifinal match 10-11 overall on the season and 3-2 in league play with 1-0 record in neutral matches thanks to Friday's 4-0 sweep of No. 6-seed Seattle U. The Roos are paced by Ben Stride, who sits at 15-4 on the season. Meanwhile, Diego Giraldo is right behind him with 14 wins to his name while Hunter Clark and Tom Kruse check in with 11 and 10 wins, respectively in the singles department.

Should the Aggies defeat the Roos, they'll play the winner between No. 4 Chicago State and No. 1 Grand Canyon on Sunday, April 28, at Noon (MT). For a complete look at the WAC Championships bracket, fans can take a look at the Tournament Central page.
