LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men's tennis team remains on the road this weekend as it heads to the Golden State Invitational hosted by Sacramento State and UC Davis.
Â
The two-day tournament will pit eight teams against one another between two facilities, one at the Sacramento State Collegiate Courts and the other at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. Teams in the tournament include Hawai'i, Grand Canyon, Fresno State, Nevada, Saint Mary's, New Mexico State, Sacramento State and UC Davis.
Â
The first of action is slated to begin on Friday, March 8, which has NM State squaring off against host UC Davis at 11 a.m. (MT) at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies will then either play Saint Mary's or Nevada depending on the results against the UCD at 3 p.m. (MT). Saturday's schedule will depend on the results from Friday's matches. Â
UC Davis enters the weekend 7-4 on the year after dropping its last two matches on the road. UCD is led by Daniel Landa with 13 wins in singles action, however, Nil Giraldez paces the team with six wins in dual action. In doubles play, the tuo of Ivan Thamma and David Goulak lead the team with a 16-2 overall record and team-high 8-1 record in dual action.
Â
Nevada is 4-2 on the year after having several of its matches postponed due to weather. The Wolf Pack registered a 5-2 win over Saint Mary's just two weeks ago at home and will get another crack at the Gaels in the opening match of the Golden State Invitational.
Â
Like Nevada, Saint Mary's had several of its matches postponed due to weather as well and is 1-6 so far in the spring. SMC's lone win so far in dual play came against Holy Names. The Gaels look to rebound and get a little payback as they play Nevada once again to open the tournament.
Â
The Aggies will then get a short week off before heading up north to take on Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico on Sunday, March 17, at 1 p.m. (MT).
