Men's Tennis Closes Regular-Season with Sweep on Senior Day

The NM State men’s tennis team sent their seniors off with a bang Wednesday afternoon, sweeping WNMU 7-0.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men's tennis team sent its two seniors off with a bang Wednesday afternoon, blanking Western New Mexico 7-0 at the NM State Tennis Center.

Between the doubles and singles matches, an emotional Carlos Vargas lauded the Christofer Goncalves and Sergi Espias for their time at New Mexico State. The longtime assistant and seventh-year head coach spoke about the two player's progression since their arrival to Las Cruces both on the court and off the court.

Before Vargas' speech to the Aggie faithful, Goncalves teamed up with Mauri Benitez to take down their counterparts at the No. 1 singles position 6-2 before Enrique Asmar and Louis Menard secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court No. 2. Epias and Stijn de Haan finished off the sweep in doubles with a 6-4 win on court No. 3.

Espias wasted no time in his final match at home in the Crimson & White, cruising past his foe 6-1, 6-1 on court No. 3 and gave NM State (14-8, 4-1 WAC) a 2-0 lead. Benitez defeated David Valles 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position before Luis Flores clinched the match on court No. 6 with his 6-1, 6-2 victory against WNMU's (3-17, 0-3 LSC) Pablo Santibanez.

Asmar was the next Aggie to register a win after he dismantled Zachary Grabovic 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles before de Haan finished things on court No. 2 against Vladimir Gnilozubov 6-4, 6-2. After being forced a third set, Goncalves was able to edge Liam Fraboulet 6-3, 3-6, 6-5 and completed the sweep of the Mustangs on senior day.

The Aggies now get a week of rest before making their way down I-10 West for the 2018 Western Athletic Conference Tournament (April 27-29) hosted by Grand Canyon at the Mesa Tennis Center. New Mexico State will play as the No. 2-seed in the tournament and get a bye on the first day. It'll play the winner between the fourth-seeded Redhawks of Seattle U or the fifth-seeded Vaqueros of UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, April 28, at 2 p.m. (MT).
