EL PASO, Texas – After dropping the doubles point on Friday at the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club, the New Mexico State women's tennis team rattled off four-straight victories in singles action and claimed the 4-3 win over Battle of I-10 rival UTEP. The win was NM State's first win against the Miners since the 2013-14 campaign.
Â
The Aggies'
Vanessa Valdez and
Rebecca Keijzerwaard dropped a tough match to UTEP's top doubles team 6-0 before
Rimpledeep Kaur and
Marie-Pier Thiffault were able to edge out their foes on court No. 2 7-6 (9-7).
Â
However, the Miners were able capture the doubles point at No. 3 doubles after
Lindsay Harlas and
Gabrielle Joyce fell in a tightly contested 7-6 (7-5 match).
Â
From that point on, it was all Aggies.
Eli Arnaudova started the rally for NM State (9-12) on court No. 5 when her opponent was retired in the second set with her leading 6-3, 3-2 (ret.). After dropping the first set, Kaur gave the Aggies the 2-1 edge after her opponent retired due to injury.
Â
Keijzerwaard made it 3-1 in favor of the Crimson & White after she ousted Daphne Visscher 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 3 before Harlas clinched the match for NM State with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Maria Paula Medina on court No. 6.
Â
The Miners (4-13) took the points at No. 2 singles and No. 4 singles, but it was too little too late after the Aggies had clinched the contest 4-3.
Â
New Mexico State now returns home for its final home game and match of the regular-season in a simultaneous match start with the men's team against UT Permian Basin, beginning at 10 a.m. The Aggie women's program will also honoring Joyce, Thiffault and Kaur – who will be graduating this spring.
