CHICAGO, Ill. – Senior
Ashvarya Shrivastav clinched the winning point for the NM State women's tennis team in a back-and-forth battle with UMKC on Friday at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club.
Â
With the match tied at 3-3, Shrivastav defeated UMKC's Dimitra Starvrianakou 7-5 6-3 to give New Mexico State the 4-3 victory and remain undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play.
Â
Despite playing without its hottest player at the moment,
Rimpledeep Kaur, NM State (8-7, 3-0 WAC) was able to rally back after dropping the doubles point for the first time in conference play. The win pushed NM State's win-streak to six and made it three-straight conference victories.
Â
UMKC (6-12, 1-2 WAC) took the doubles point after winning on courts Nos. 1 and 3. NM State's lone victory in doubles action, with no surprise, came from its No. 2 doubles team. However, it was Shrivastav and
Mia Brandt this time around with the absence of Kaur. The Aggies No. 2 tandem was the first to finish and defeated their foes from UMKC 6-3.
Â
Trailing 1-0,
Chloe Jolliff gave NM State a boost out of the gate with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Melinda Johnson at the No. 2 singles slot. UMKC countered with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles before
Lindsay Harlas and
Eli Arnaudova responded with wins over their UMKC counterparts.
Â
The win was Harlas' second-straight win at No. 5 singles and is now 7-7 in dual play. Arnaudova has won three-straight at the No. 6 position and is now 5-1 in dual action.
Â
With Harlas and Arnaudova's wins tying the match at 3-3, it gave Shrivastav the motivation to finish off Stavrianakou in the second set.
Â
The Aggies return to action Saturday, April 2, at 12:45 p.m. (MT) when they face the host, Chicago State, at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club.
