LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's tennis team continues its homestand this weekend with a pair of matches against Wyoming and Northern Arizona. The Aggies will first take on Wyoming at 2 p.m. (MT) on Friday before entertaining Northern Arizona on Sunday at 10 a.m.
EYING THE AGGIESSeniors
Mia Brandt and
Ashvarya Shrivastav currently leads New Mexico State with nine wins apiece while Shrivastav has one less loss than Brandt at nine. Fellow senior
Erika Castillo Lopez is right behind her fellow classmates, checking in with a 7-10 overall record in singles and 2-4 in dual action.
Brandt, who plays predominantly at No. 5 singles, and freshman
Lindsay Harlas are tied for the team lead in dual wins at 3-3. Harlas, a Las Cruces, N.M., native has won three of her last four matches at No. 6 singles.
In doubles play, the duo of
Chloe Jolliff and Harlas has gone 3-3 in dual play at No. 3 doubles. Shrivastav and
Rimpledeep Kaur are also 3-3 in dual play, but have split time between the No. 1 (1-2) and No. 2 (2-1) slots.
COWGIRLS RIDE INTO LAS CRUCESNew Mexico State is slated to host the Cowgirls of Wyoming at 2 p.m. on Friday at the NMSU Tennis Center. Wyoming enters the match with a 6-4 mark in dual play. The Cowgirls have won two of their last three matches, falling to Denver, 5-2, in its latest contest.
Magdalena Stencel is tied for the team lead with a 15-7 mark in singles play and 7-2 record in dual play. The sophomore plays at No. 1 singles for Wyoming and was an All-Mountain West selection in her first year of competition last year. Stencel had won seven-straight matches before she fell to DU's No. 1 singles player last week.
Nastya Tokareva is the other player with 15 wins on the team, checking in with an overall record of 15-8 and 8-5 mark in dual play. Tokareva has split time at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for the Cowgirls. The senior is riding a five-match win-streak as well in singles play.
Tokareva and Stencel teamed up to go 10-6 in doubles play and 6-4 in dual action. The pair played all their dual matches at the No. 1 doubles slot for Wyoming.
Dorottya Jonas is the only other player with double-digit wins for Wyoming in singles play, coming in with an overall mark of 14-8 and 6-4 record in dual play. Jones has played most of her dual matches at the No. 3 position, but has also played at the No. 2 slot. Jones teamed up with Miranda Talbert at No. 3 doubles to go 5-1 in dual play, and is the only other duo to tally more than one win.
LUMBERJACKS AWAITTwo days later, the Aggies entertain Northern Arizona at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28. The Lumberjacks are 4-4 on the year with wins over Southern Illinois (4-3), Idaho (4-3), Seattle U (4-1) and Portland State (5-2). NAU's four losses have come at the hands of New Mexico (4-0), Washington State (7-0), Eastern Washington (4-3) and Arizona (5-0) – all on the road.
Marta Lewandowska leads the Lumberjacks with a 5-1 record in dual play and is tied with Hanneke Lodewijks for the second-most wins in singles play at 9-8. Lewandowska has won three of her last four matches with one left unfinished against Camila Wesbrooks of then-No. 37 Arizona.
Jordan Denesik is second on the team in dual victories at 4-3 and also leads the team in overall wins with a 10-8 mark.
LAST TIME OUTIn its dual home-opener, NM State dropped a tight 5-2 decision to Abilene Christian last weekend.
Rimpledeep Kaur and
Lindsay Harlas tallied New Mexico State's two points in singles play on courts No. 2 and No. 6.
The Aggies tied things up out of the gate in singles play thanks to Kaur's win at No. 2 singles, but three-straight wins from ACU clinched the Wildcats the match. Harlas' win came at the end when the freshman battled back to win the second and third set after dropping her first set 6-0. The win was Harlas' third victory in four matches.
